In Greece, Médecins Sans Frontières are operating in the unofficial migrants' camp in Patras (since the 14th of May 2008) and in the detention center for undocumented migrants in Pagani in the island of Lesvos (since the 2nd of June 2008). They offer medical care, humanitarian assistance and psychosocial support. The organization operates similar projects in Italy, Malta and Morocco.

Until the end of August, 1.124 migrants have been examined in the island of Lesvos (804 in the detention centre and 320 at the arrival point at the port) and 1.736 people in the camp at Patras. The most common clinical findings are dermatological diseases, respiratory infections, wounds, depression and post-traumatic stress.

The organization is deeply concerned over the poor living conditions at the detention centre where no heating is available, toilets and showers are very few for the number of people present (500-600 people) and often do not function and are not repaired. The maintainance and cleaning of the premises is also a significant problem.

In the camp of Patras, during August, medical sessions were increased by 44%, rising to 39 per day. This is explained by the the increase of the number of migrants, also revealed by the picture of more people sleeping on mattresses made by paper on the borders of the camp.
