Social insurace in Greece is mandatory and includes health insurance. Only legal aliens: those holding a residence and work permit, have a right to social insurance.

For aliens not legaly in Greece, with no valid travel documents, entrance visa or residence permit, the provision of any type of health care service in the public sector is prohibited. Hospitals and clinics are exempted in the case of underage children or in cases of emergency treatment (life-threatening events). (Article 84/Ν.3386/2005)

The majority of insured migrants are insured with IKA, the largest social insurance fund in Greece and can benefit from the same services as Greek citizens: medical care for themselves and their dependents, sick leave benefits, maternity leave, benefits in case of occupational accident, pension.

More specifically with regards to medical care:

- they can visit phycisians employed by IKA in IKA polyclinics and hospitals

- they can visit a family doctor, when this is applicable

- they can visit a rural doctor, in rural areas

- they can visit health centers for medical examination and tests

- they can participate in screening programmes

- they can be treated for emergency and non emergency situations in all public hospitals
