Turkey

The largest group of Middle Eastern migrants in the UK are from Turkey. There are approximately 69400 Turkish migrants in the UK, which is about 0.12% of the total UK population according to the Labour Forces Survey 2006 [Labour Forces Survey]. This number only includes those who were not born in the UK and not 2nd, 3rd and subsequent generation immigrants. Of this number:

51% were male
49% were female
 9% were aged 0-15 years
19% were aged 16-24 years
52% were aged 25-44 years
16% were aged 45-64 years
 3% were aged 65+ years


Most of the Turkish people who migrate to the UK are labour migrants and more recent flows of Kurdish refugees and asylum seekers. 41% were employed, 7% were unemployed and 52% were inactive. 35% of Turkish people in the UK either own property outright or have bought a home with a mortgage. Iran

The second largest group of Middle Eastern migrants in the UK are from Iran. There are approximately 60900 Iranian migrants in the UK, which is about 0.1% of the total UK population according to the Labour Forces Survey 2006 [Labour Forces Survey]. This number only includes those who were not born in the UK and not 2nd, 3rd and subsequent generation immigrants. Of this number:


60% were male
40% were female
 7% were aged 0-15 years 
17% were aged 16-24 years 
38% were aged 25-44 years
33% were aged 45-64 years
 5% were aged 65+ years

Most of the Iranians who migrate to the UK are settled communities of refugees from the Iranian Revolution, more recently arrived asylum seekers and refugees and work permit holders. Of these Iranians, 51% were employed, 12% were unemployed and 36% were inactive. 61% of Iranians in the UK either own property outright or have bought a home with a mortgage.
