Free online training for health professionals working with pregnant women and new mothers from Black and minority ethnic communities

The training course Breaking down the barriers, developed by health charity Medact, is designed to help professionals improve access to maternity and child health services for marginalised women from these communities. In particular it aims to support midwives, doctors and health visitors to understand the practical, cultural and communication needs of women who do not speak English and recent migrants, including asylum seekers, refugees, and women with uncertain immigration status.

Mental Health at the Margins

UCL-BALM Short Course, 11-14 February 2008 UCL Banyan Course

The course is for mental-health professionals from NGOs and government health insitutions, working with marginal and displaced populations in South Asia, but it will also benefit professionals from backgrounds such as rights activists, law-enforcement officials, judiciary and donor organisations, who play a key role in working with mental health of destitute and refugee population.

Health Foundation's Leadership Schemes

This scheme is aimed at multi-organisational groups working to improve the quality of healthcare for BME groups. We will support six outstanding teams to become more effective in their work to improve the quality of care for people from BME groups. It is a unique opportunity for teams who are passionate about delivering projects to improve mainstream health services.


The Ethnicity Training Network

The Ethnicity Training Network has been created to help change the way that people think and work in health and social care services. The Network was set up with funding from the Department of Health. It is based at the Institute for Health Sciences and Public Health Research at the University of Leeds.


Refugee Studies Centre Summer School in Forced Migration

The Refugee Studies Centre's annual International Summer School offers an intensive, interdisciplinary and participative approach to the study of forced migration. It aims to enable people working with refugees and other forced migrants to reflect critically on the forces and institutions that dominate the world of the displaced. It will be run in July 2008.
